Patterned Obi -

This week at Kimono school I learned how to tie a patterned Obi - so that the pattern lines up with the center of the back (and front). It is amazing how precise the body measurements can be. The key to getting this pattern in the right place is using the finger-to-thumb measurement, which in turn is about one quarter of your waist measurement, to pre-measure the pattern placement, before you put the obi on.

Reflections on Kimono −

One of my goals, for my Year in Kimono project, is to be able to get dressed in about 10 minutes. The project is now three months old and already I have gone from taking 90 minutes to get dressed to now needing about 25 minutes! People  always ask me if I can dress myself. And I proudly answer “yes!” This, of course, is thanks to my kitsuke (kimono wearing) classes.

I recently watched a special on NHK about ABC Cooking school, and they have over 240,000 students and it made me wonder how many women take kitsuke. Wearing kimono is like cooking, in that it’s not difficult, but someone should teach you some basics. I have studied 12 hours of a 36-hour course, and I feel comfortable and confident dressing myself. My10-minute goal is not far off.

In a recent Op-Ed piece in the New York Times a Tokyo mother, writing about her desire to wear kimono to her child’s graduation, concluded that although kimono, with it’s endless possibilities of color and fabric choice is beautiful “those aesthetic and creative pleasures are increasingly not worth the trouble for modern women, so kimono wearing is likely to continue to decline.”

I don’t think there is any reason for decline. Kimono wearing is a skill, like cooking or riding a bike, that once learned, can bring so much enjoyment.

I was back in kimono school this week, working on graduating from a Hanhaba (half width) obi to a Nagoya (full-width, or as I been cheekingly calling it the "grown-up") obi. Next time I'll try to get a picture of me enroute to kimono school. I prepare my hair and make-up and then pack all my kimono things into a paper-bag and head out in my street clothes and in tabi (kimono socks) and zōri (kimono shoes).  All in an effort to reduce the number of things I have to carry around after I'm dressed.

The Nagoya obi is intricate and requires more pieces and a vision of the end result so that the pieces you add end up in the right direction (pattern out or pattern up for example). Here I am in my obi-ita (obi board) - which I think my sensei would think is a little revealing, but if you don't mind I don't mind. And I am trying to get my obiage (the silk scarf accessory) in position. It has to be prepared, so the most intricate part (either weaving or embroidery) is facing up when all is tied and done.

I got dressed and tied my Otaiko (drum bow), but then when my teachers heard I was going to go out to a function in my kimono, they quickly untied my obi and re-adjusted and re-tied me (to ensure all lines were beautiful!) So kind! Someone recently commented to me that they don't like to wear kimono because it's so tight, but it feels comforting to me. Especially after two women tied me into it, with such kindness and care - afterward I felt like I was walking around in their hug!

Out in the Snow −

I'm not too keen on going out in kimono in inclement weather. In fact, I complained the last time when it was just 8°C, so you can imagine how resistant I was to go out in 2°C  and it was snowing! But, I was invited to a friend's dance show and couldn't miss it. I was excited to wear my new kimono and to test my theory about how warm my wrap would be, so I got dressed and headed out.

The night of dance was lovely and the effort delivered the greatest compliment of the project so far! It came from a taxi driver who, because of my umbrella couldn't see my face until I was seated in his taxi, but upon seeing my face he exclaimed "Oh, I thought you were Japanese!" Yay!

I was warm. This wool/fur combination worked wonderfully! Even in the snow. I still have long underwear on, but am getting better at hiding it!  And all this took only 30 minutes to get dressed!! Woo-hoo, getting closer to my 5-10 minute goal!

Beauty of Kimono starts with Han-eri -

The other question people always ask me is "can you dress yourself?" To which I answer "sort of." However, I realize the more I learn, the more I need to learn.  For example, I've recently learned how important the Han-eri (collar) on my Nagajuban (inner kimono) - this is the white collar the peeks out from the kimono. If the collar is starched and straight, the rest of the kimono will hang beautifully. And of course - there is a secret solution to that.

Every kimono school or sensei (teacher) has their own methods and secrets, and my school believes in a firm, cardboard collar that can be attached and removed (for cleaning) by double sided-tape.

My kitsuke (how to wear kimono) course is 18 classes long with each class covering a theme. I have 15 more classes at kimono school and I can't wait to see what's next!

New Kimono −

People are curious if I have my own kimono. If you have read this blog from the start, you saw the posts when I bought my first (and second) kimono - before the end of last year. Then I bought one from the kimono school, and last weekend I was at the Oedo Flea Market again, and found myself again at the booth of Sugamiya (where I got my fur wrap and purse) and fell in love. I see now, how the kimono-buying habit starts. I loved this pattern from the moment I saw it, and I realized that the answer to my winter coat problem could be solved with this kimono! I have a wrap that I bought in Germany (made from organic wool, featured here on www.magnifeco.com) that would look beautiful with this colour.

Reflections on Kimono − 着物について

credit: ask.com
By their very nature kimono are delicate and need extra care; most are silk and require special cleaning. This means that in order to look as beautiful as possible, each one needs to be folded and put away with care after each wear. This helps to preserve the garment and to keep it from creasing when stored. Kimonos are often stored wrapped in paper called tatōshi.

This may prove to be the most challenging part for me. By the time I'm ready to take my kimono off, I'm really ready to just have it off (in a pile, like the rest of my clothes) - but it requires an additional 10 to 20 minutes, to fold everything and put it all away.

I have a great canvas storage box I bought at Ikea years ago, and it holds all the kimono pieces perfectly and fits neatly under my sofa. Waiting until the next kimono day.

Back to Kimono School -

Finally, after over one month's absence from kimono school I returned for another class. I quickly realized that I had reinterpreted and recreated a new way of dressing. Unintentionally, I had forgotten some parts and the order of things and had been dressing in my own fashion. A bit like putting together a piece of IKEA furniture without following the directions.

Thus each time I dressed myself over the past month, I would inevitably have some pieces left over. Oops. And what a difference proper technique makes. I felt much more comfortable. My sensei adjusted where I've been tying my obi to be higher (right below the chest) and tighter and all of a sudden the kimono feels much more comfortable (and comforting - a bit like a cocoon).

I also learned a new knot. This hanabunko (flower box) is meant to look like a flower on top of a letterbox. Now that kimono school has started in earnest, I'll be attending 3 classes per month and soon - will graduate to a Nagoya (full-width) obi! I can't wait!
