I had to go somewhere with my husband yesterday, and we decided we would come home in a taxi. I’ve ridden in a taxi, in kimono before, but yesterday was the first day I rode with someone else. As I do when I wear casual clothes, I entered the taxi first. What a mistake. It was one of my most ungraceful moments - ever. My legs seemed to each go their own way and the kimono got twisted around as I tried to slide over to sit behind the driver. It was so ungraceful that when we reached our destination, the driver leaned over, and spoke to me in English, and guided me out of the taxi “Keep your knees together, move slowly, keep your right hand on the kimono – that’s it.” I was so shocked – firstly that the taxi driver (a woman) had overcome her fear of speaking English so that she could guide me (it was the kind of tone that a perturbed mother or aunt gives to a younger child) and that my entrance into the taxi had been so ungraceful that the driver decided she couldn’t watch me repeat the performance.
It wasn’t until I got home, and was putting the kimono away that I saw the tear. Then I realized – the taxi driver must have been concerned, not just for the grace of the kimono, but for the care and helping me avoid further damage.

Graduation kimono -

No, I haven't finished my kitsuke (kimono wearing lessons), but at my school students who finish two months of lessons are gifted with a kimono!! Yay! Due to the March 11 earthquake/tsunami disaster in Japan and my trip to Canada, this graduation came later then it should have, but it was exciting nonetheless!

I already have 4 kimono, but as it is the end of April, I am getting a little weary of wearing the same four kimono for the last four months. However, that was part of my challenge - to learn to break away from my western perspective of 'consumptive culture' and wearing fast fashion (clothes that are produced on trend, cheaply) and gain a new appreciation for pieces (like kimono) that I can wear again and again. And I love each and every one of my kimonos.

But, one more can't hurt! Especially in such a pretty, spring-like colour! Here I am, at Dean & Deluca, mixing my western tastes for espresso coffee and pastries with my Japanese apparel.

Perfecting the Obi -

There is so much to remember about kimono, and now I am starting to learn more about Obi (the sash that keeps it all together). There are many different types of women's obi, and their use is regulated by many unwritten rules not unlike those that concern the kimono itself. Certain types of obi are used with certain types of kimono; the obis of married and unmarried women are tied in different ways. Often the obi adjusts the formality and fanciness of the whole kimono outfit: the same kimono can be worn to very different situations depending on what kind of obi is worn with it.

Nijūdaiko musubi (二重太鼓 two layer drum). It is, as its name suggests, a version of the common taiko musubi, worn with the formal fukuro obi. The two layer knot has an auspicious double meaning of "double joy" and is worn for formal occasions.

The tying of this can best be described as an acrobatic affair best suited for those double-jointed in their shoulders. Unlike my usual Hanhaba obi (half width obi) which I tie in the front and then twist to the back, this Nijūdaiko is arranged and set in place - all from the back! Very tiring on the triceps, but soooo pretty!

Out in the back garden -

No, I don't have a garden. Most people in Tokyo don't. There just isn't the space for it. But like most Japanese, I crave nature and love being near lush vegetation. It's a stark contrast from the mass amounts of buildings that are here, in the world's largest city. And, as we are still experiencing aftershocks (and some new earthquakes thrown in for good measure), I like to get outside to soothe my soul.

When the March 11 earthquake struck most things (like gas, phone lines and, in some places, electricity) shut off. So I wasn't expecting this water fountain to be functioning. Oops!! Most things in Japan are getting back to normal, and the water fountain is no exception!

I just sat for a while, collecting my thoughts, breathing in the fresh air and thinking about how lucky I am to be able to enjoy Tokyo in the springtime.

Blue Kimono - Daimaru -

Now we are back in Tokyo and spring has sprung. How green and lush compared to Toronto! This is the first kimono I ever bought. I went with a friend to a big year-end sale at Daimaru department store at the end of 2010, just before The Year in Kimono project began. This kimono is recycled and was the only one in the entire store that was my size. Because I am 172 cm tall, it is a challenge to find recycled kimono that fit me. Not just in the length, but more importantly in the arms. My friend and I must have searched through hundreds before finding this one. And I loved it on first sight. The colour is beautiful and I love the way the silk changes and gets darker the closer it gets to the ground; making it perfect for everyday wear and hiding dirt. Now that the weather is getting warmer, it’s perfect to head outside for a walk. I took a stroll to the Museum of Contemporary Sculpture, which is located in Nakameguro. It’s outdoor areas include a garden of figurative studies; a wonderful peaceful spot to sit and contemplate life, and enjoy the spring.

Cherry Blossom - さくら

We almost missed it; the time when spring really arrives! Forget the calendar (where spring 'officially' arrives on March 21) - in Japan, the real sign of spring is the delicate opening of these sakura (cherry blossoms). The process begins when an ever-so hint of pink can be seen at the end of each branch. Then, as the blossoms start to make their appearance, so do the crowds and the people celebrating the beauty, the beginning of the new year (both academic and most fiscal years start anew in April) and After a few (too short) days, when the winds blow, the petals begin to flutter in the wind like snowflakes and hanami (flower watching) time is over.

So in the last few days of sakura, I took a walk along Meguro River and enjoyed the quiet, peaceful beauty. What a difference from the brown of Toronto to the budding green of Tokyo.

Kimono in Canada - Part II -

I'm from Toronto, in Canada. And the current fad in Toronto for the last couple of years has been sushi! So much so that now it seems like there is a sushi restaurant on every block! But wait - before you run off to Toronto to test for yourself - let me tell you that the 'food & safety council' passed a measure that all 'raw' sushi has to be flash frozen first (to allegedly kill off parasites and other nasties) - but, as you can imagine, what it really kills off is the flavour! But, beggars and can't be choosers and Torontonians are crazy for sushi!

And, in the last year or so even the concept of Izakya has started. Toronto seems crazy for Japan! Food, anyways. Kimono, not so much! When we headed down to the popular waterfront for a little photoshoot, I was completely surprised that no one stopped to notice the kimono. No one even took a second glance. Nothing. The only attention I could get was from the swans! And even that took some work! (I'm whistling at them).

In the end, the swans did come over but they were the only one who gave me any mind. I have no idea why the passer-bys weren't intrigued or curious about a non-Japanese woman in kimono? I don't think I've ever seen a woman in kimono on the street, or at the waterfront in Toronto, so it's not like Torontotonians are 'over it'. Maybe they just thought I was wearing a long black dress. Back to Japan, time to leave the grey and brown behind and get back to smiling faces and cherry blossoms.

Sakura Kimono in Toronto -

We took a trip to Canada this past month to celebrate my father-in-law’s 70th birthday. Of course, kimono went with me and I have to say, I was very surprised by the reactions (or lack of reactions) I received from my fellow Canadians. When I wear kimono in Tokyo, especially in my neighbourhood, I usually get a lot of reactions. Sometimes it’s a head nod or a smile, sometimes a low whispered ‘kirei’ or ‘suteki’ as I pass. But when I wore it in Toronto, the reaction was indifferent; most people didn’t even take notice. We headed down to the popular waterfront to take some pictures and didn’t catch the notice of any of the runners, cyclists or dogwalkers on the boardwalk. No one gave me a second look, a nod, nothing. Perhaps they don't recognize kimono if it's not on maiko or geisha? I have no idea why, I was very surprised.
Oh well, we had fun trying to bring some spring to Toronto in my sakura kimono. Spring comes later in Canada, when after the snow melts, we are blessed with tulips and daffodils instead of sakura.

Kimono in Canada - Part 1 -

It was my father-in-law's 70th birthday so we decided to surprise him and make a trip back to Canada for his birthday. Of course, kimono had to go too! So on the right-hand side of my suitcase were all my winter clothes (it can still snow and be miserable at this time of year) and on the left hand-side was my kimono. Not surprisingly, the kimono (I only took two) took up a lot less room than the street clothes.

We stayed for a few days with a friend and I was so pleased to see that I picked the perfect kimono to match his house! Almost like it was a planned photo shoot, but it wasn't. I had never been to his house before.

The weather held out, and it only snowed once, and my father-in-law was so surprised, and happy he said it was his best birthday ever!
