Summer in Japan - 日本の夏

Summer time means festival time! This past weekend marked the Nakameguro Summer Festival - with street dancing and lots of fun! (even the rain couldn't stop the fun!)

夏といえばお祭り時です！週末に中目黒夏祭りが行われました。道路の上で踊りがあり、とても楽しかったです！（雨も全く気にならないほど！）

Everyone was out to enjoy the night, with food, drinks and dancing, it was perfect!

みんなこの夜を楽しみに来ていて、食べ物や飲み物や踊りがあり、完璧でした！

I was so excited to be dressed for the occasion. I even had my fan tucked into my obi! There's still plenty of summer and summer festivals left to enjoy (the Noryo Bon Odori festival and the Sumida River Fireworks are still to come!)

この機会にお洒落するのがとても楽しみでした。うちわを帯にさしてもみました！まだまだ楽しい夏とたくさんの夏祭りが残っています（麻布十番祭りと隅田川の花火大会はまだこれからです！）

Out in the back garden - お庭で

No, I don't have a garden. Most people in Tokyo don't. There just isn't the space for it. But like most Japanese, I crave nature and love being near lush vegetation. It's a stark contrast from the mass amounts of buildings that are here, in the world's largest city. And, as we are still experiencing aftershocks (and some new earthquakes thrown in for good measure), I like to get outside to soothe my soul.

いや、家にはお庭はありません。東京に住んでいるほとんどの人もありません。そういうスペースがないのです。でも私は多くの日本人と同じように自然と接することが必要で、みずみずしい植物の近くにいるのが大好きです。

When the March 11 earthquake struck most things (like gas, phone lines and, in some places, electricity) shut off. So I wasn't expecting this water fountain to be functioning. Oops!! Most things in Japan are getting back to normal, and the water fountain is no exception!

3月11かの地震の後、ガス、電話、電気、など色々なものが切れました。なので、この温水も効かないと思っていましたけど、ビックリ！この温水だけではなく、だんだん日本は普通に戻っていっています。

I just sat for a while, collecting my thoughts, breathing in the fresh air and thinking about how lucky I am to be able to enjoy Tokyo in the springtime.

Can you dress yourself - 着付け、できますか？

I had a chance to meet up with friends today and for some, it was their first time to see me in kimono. And every one of them asked me "can you dress yourself?" After two months at kimono school - yes, I can dress myself. And in a very short time, I have been able to get my dressing time down to about half an hour. It turned out looking in the mirror was slowing me down. Kimono school has only two small stand-up mirrors, and you only get to see when you are done. This means I get dressed by feel. Fingers at my collar, certain pieces lined up with certain areas of the body.

今日は久しぶりにお友達と会う機会がありまして、初めて私の着物姿を見る友達とも会いました。「自分で着付けしたの？」とみんなに聞かれました。着物学校に通い始めて2ヶ月後の今になり、「はい、自分で着付けしました」と答えられました。もう、着付け時間を30分ぐらいにおさめられるようになりました。結局、鏡の前で着付けすることが遅かったようでした。着物学校には鏡がたった2つしかありません。着替え終えた後にしか鏡に映る映像を見てはいけません。ということは、感覚で着付けをしなければならないのです。指を襟につけ、生地を体の目安に合わせます。

And I'm still finding it very comfortable. Especially as the weather improves! This week the weather got warm enough I didn't even need a wrap!

そして着物の着心地良さにまだ感動しています！特に、お天気のいい日。今週は暖かかったため、ショールも必要なかったです！

Out in the rain - 雨の日

Why is it that everytime I need to go somewhere 'special' the weather will not co-operate?! After kimono class this week I had a very important date -  I was invited to watch a special TV recording of BlueMan Group and Kabuki actor Kamejiro at the BlueMan theatre in Roppongi.

なぜ「スペシャル」なお出かけのある日に限って天気が反抗するの？今日の着物着付け授業の後、少し特別なデートがありました。六本木のブルー・マン・グループ劇場で、ブルー・マン・グループのメンバーと歌舞伎者の亀次郎さんのテレビ撮影の拝見招待をいただきました。

Everyone knows the BlueMan Group - they transplanted a version of their New York show here in Tokyo.

みなさんもきっとブルー・マン・グループをご存じだと思います。現在、ニューヨーク公演の東京バージョンをやっています。

And everyone knows Kamejiro - and the pairing was fantastic. It was recorded by WOWOW in 3D. Check your TV listings for the program to air sometime in May.

そしてもちろん、みなさん亀次郎さんはご存知ですよね。彼のブルー・マン・グループとのコラボレーションは最高でした。WOWOWチャンネルに3Dで撮影されましたので、是非是非チェックしてみてください！5月に放送される予定だそうです。

Out in the Neighbourhood - 近所にお出かけ

Oh my gosh.... I need to go back to Kimono-school a.s.a.p. Today, it took me almost an hour to get dressed, and just when I thought I might be ready I looked down and realized my inner layer was hanging below my outer layer! But after an hour and a half of dressing, I ventured down to my local flower shop to buy some flowers.

あらら、やっぱり着物学院で早く授業を受けるべきだった。今日の着物姿の準備には１時間もかかった。やっと終わったと思ったら着物用の下着が着物の外に出てしまっていた。近所のお花屋さんに出かけるのに１時間半もかかってしまった。

Luckily, my hair doesn't take me long. Thanks to this Hair Zing, that is all the rage here, I can get my hair up in about 5 minutes! I think after a few more classes at Kimono-school, I will venture to the kimono hairdressers to learn how to look a little more polished. But for now the hair zing is a dream. Too bad there isn't a 'kimono-zing'!

しかし、ヘアスタイルの準備はHair Zingのおかげで五分で出来上がったのでとても簡単！着物学院に通い始めたらきっともっときちんとしたヘアスタイルをできる。でもそれまではhair zingを使い続ける。ああ、「着物zing」というのがあったら楽なのに！

Today was one of the coldest days of the year and I was lucky to have my wrap, but it wasn't nearly warm enough  for me. Already I was dreaming of warmer days and yukata ( a lighter, cotton kimono that is supposedly not only easier to put on and wear but very cool on hot summer days).  However, my shoes were a joy! I got some looks and received a few comments of 'suteki' (lovely) as I tried to walk in slower, smaller steps.

今日はすごく寒くて襟巻きがあって助かったがそれでも寒すぎた。もっと暖かい日で、浴衣を着られたらいいなあと思った。しかし外が寒くても草履はちょうど私によかった！小さいステップをして、ゆっくり歩こうとしたらうれしいことに、周りの人々に「素敵！」と言われた。

But the best moment was when I was trying to pose for this picture, a tiny, old lady couldn't stop staring as she approached, and then when she passed me, she turned around and started laughing. A true, deep laugh that of course brought me to laughter.

この写真のためにポーズしていたら体の小さいおばあさんが私をじーっと見つめてげらげら笑い始めた。私も一緒につられて笑っちゃった！

And before we could we could catch her laughing at me, we ran out of memory on the camera.

彼女の笑い姿の写真をとろうとしたら、カメラのメモリーがなくなってしまっていた。
