Cherry Blossom - さくら
We almost missed it; the time when spring really arrives! Forget the calendar (where spring 'officially' arrives on March 21) - in Japan, the real sign of spring is the delicate opening of these sakura (cherry blossoms). The process begins when an ever-so hint of pink can be seen at the end of each branch. Then, as the blossoms start to make their appearance, so do the crowds and the people celebrating the beauty, the beginning of the new year (both academic and most fiscal years start anew in April) and After a few (too short) days, when the winds blow, the petals begin to flutter in the wind like snowflakes and hanami (flower watching) time is over.
So in the last few days of sakura, I took a walk along Meguro River and enjoyed the quiet, peaceful beauty. What a difference from the brown of Toronto to the budding green of Tokyo.

Sakura Kimono in Toronto -
We took a trip to Canada this past month to celebrate my father-in-law’s 70th birthday. Of course, kimono went with me and I have to say, I was very surprised by the reactions (or lack of reactions) I received from my fellow Canadians. When I wear kimono in Tokyo, especially in my neighbourhood, I usually get a lot of reactions. Sometimes it’s a head nod or a smile, sometimes a low whispered ‘kirei’ or ‘suteki’ as I pass. But when I wore it in Toronto, the reaction was indifferent; most people didn’t even take notice. We headed down to the popular waterfront to take some pictures and didn’t catch the notice of any of the runners, cyclists or dogwalkers on the boardwalk. No one gave me a second look, a nod, nothing. Perhaps they don't recognize kimono if it's not on maiko or geisha? I have no idea why, I was very surprised.
Oh well, we had fun trying to bring some spring to Toronto in my sakura kimono. Spring comes later in Canada, when after the snow melts, we are blessed with tulips and daffodils instead of sakura.

Sakura is coming -
This is written mostly for my Western readers: The weather in Japan is temperate. I just came back from Canada, and had to suffer -22°C. Most of Japan, especially Tokyo, doesn't see that kind of weather; here it's mild in the winter and hot in the summer. I think that's one of the reasons why the changing of the seasons is so celebrated. The weather itself doesn't change much at this time of year but the cherry blossoms signal the beginning of a new fiscal and school year, and the end to winter. The precise date of the opening of the blossoms has been forecast, and for Tokyo, the forecast is stating March 26! Parties will begin. Picnics will take place under the blossoms. And women will get out their kimono and dress for the season. I can't wait.
