Yukata, finally -

I'm back from my vacation in Vietnam. It was so much fun ! We had such a lovely time and enjoyed the food, the people and the culture. And although I didn't wear kimono - I did see kimono while I was there... in this ad!

I've been struggling with my yukata search for a while, now. They are either too short or they fit 'just right' but I was warned they might shrink after the first washing. So, in desperation, late one night night I turned to the internet. After all, it had been successful for me with the zōri (traditonal kimono shoes), so why not with yukata? I was so excited - I found a company, with an English website, they had LL size yukatas, in cute patterns and for only about 4,000 yen ($45 USD). So I ordered one! It arrived after only 3 days, but arghhh - it is too short!

Then a friend offered to take me to a store they knew, in Shimokitazawa, and finally I found my yukata! The summer is in it's fullest, hottest wave and I finally have a yukata!!

Summer = new kimono - 夏=新しい着物

I love summer. It's one of my favourite seasons! In kimono fashion there are two versions of summer. Hitoe (single layer kimono) and yukata (cotton kimono). Hitoe is usually silk or polyester (not cotton),  is unlined (hence the single-layer) and is worn like kimono (including with socks). It is worn in June and September, when the weather is mild but not too hot. It also has a lighter obi (sash). I found this one at Sayuki-san's shop in Asakusa and loved it for the origami crane design. It's polyester, so will be fine during the rainy season (which will be most of June).

New Kimono −

People are curious if I have my own kimono. If you have read this blog from the start, you saw the posts when I bought my first (and second) kimono - before the end of last year. Then I bought one from the kimono school, and last weekend I was at the Oedo Flea Market again, and found myself again at the booth of Sugamiya (where I got my fur wrap and purse) and fell in love. I see now, how the kimono-buying habit starts. I loved this pattern from the moment I saw it, and I realized that the answer to my winter coat problem could be solved with this kimono! I have a wrap that I bought in Germany (made from organic wool, featured here on www.magnifeco.com) that would look beautiful with this colour.

Shoe Dilemma -

I was so thrilled to have made it out the door for Hatsumode (the first temple visit on the first day of the new year), that I went without proper shoes *gasp* I'm so torn, I want to be respectful and wear kimono in a way that neither embarrasses me nor anyone involved in this project. Plus, I don't want to appear to be 'flaunting' tradition, but when it came to shoes I had a struggle. My friends, advisors, the shop clerks and even my Kimono-school sensei told me that traditional zōri (proper kimono shoes as seen above) are meant to be tight and uncomfortable. My shoe size is European 40 or North American 10, 25.5 in Japan, however the largest women's shoe size sold in most Japanese stores is European 38 or North American 8.

I was able to find socks and but couldn't find shoes that I could get on my feet let alone walk in. Now, traditionally zōri are not meant to fit but are meant to make the foot look smaller and thus are worn several sizes too small. After searching high and low I finall found a shoemaker online who would make me an LL size shoe in extra wide (they will still be 2 cms to short and 1 cm too narrow). But they hadn't arrived in time for Hatsumode, so I wore my Harley Davidson boots.

If I could, I would wear these always. They are so comfortable, but they are really not very graceful, and don't lend to walking in a delicate manner. A new solution had to be found, so with the online shoe maker saying they couldn't deliver my custom zori for another 3 weeks, I headed to Asakusa and found a shoe shop that could help.

Getaya have been providing Japanese footwear since 1912. And finally I was able to get a pair of yaki-geta (wood-bottom sandals) not as formal as zōri but they fit! And are more suitable than the Harley Davidson boots.

I was also able to pick the colour swatch and had them adjusted to fit the height of my foot. Yay - now I can carry on with the kimono wearing challenge in style.

Shopping at the Market −

Shopping for kimono gear is getting expensive! I have three kimono now but only 4 obi: each kimono should have at least 3 obi to increase it's wearability and offer different looks for each kimono. But more pressingly, I need a winter coat or wrap and zōri (kimono shoes). Like everything, you can buy kimono and their accessories in shops or department stores or scout around markets and second hand shops for better prices and vintage and recycled pieces.

The Oedo Antique Market in central Tokyo is one of my favourite markets. So on the first market of the year, I was there looking chiefly for a wrap and shoes but found myself distracted by beautiful obi. I love black, and in a perfect world I would wear black kimono with bright obi - and maybe motorcycle boots. It's difficult to think about pairing my own fashion sense with the traditional style that is not from my culture. Match that with my size, and it means that if I want to keep the cost down I need to wear what is available in my size. On with the shopping...

After several hours or browsing and picking through stalls I came away with a great recycled fur wrap that will hopefully keep me warm, and a handbag. Still need to find shoes.

First Task - get a Kimono /

Timing is everything. That this project began at the end of the year is quite fortuitous because that's when most department stores have their 'annual kimono sales'. Kimono prices can range from a few hundred to many thousands of dollars, depending on the handiwork, the fabric and the craftsmanship, like hand embroidery.
The first sale of the year found me at Daimaru in central Tokyo, which is one of the few department stores to also sell 'recycled' kimono. Recycled is the term for 'used' or second-hand kimono. The advantage is that recycled kimono are less expensive. However, there aren't many recycled kimono in my size (172 cms/ 5'8'') - the lovely clerk shows the typical size of kimono.
But we sifted through piles of kimono to find something. The true measure of fit is in the arms - a kimono has to hit the bone at the wrist when the are is extended, and body - there needs to be enough excess fabric in length (usually 30 cms) to provide overlap at the waist.

This was my first ever experience trying on kimono. I couldn't believe how how luxurious and soft it is. This one is silk,, and I can see why I'll have to take care to keep it in this condition (for years!) Although my goal with this project is to borrow, share and wear as many different kimono as possible, I need to have one of my own. And so, on December 23rd I bought my first kimono.

Now to find out how to wear it....
